Classical vs Complex

Homoeopathy is based on an understanding that our body has an ability to heal itself and this healing activity is seen as symptoms.

Sometimes the disease is so strong, or our defence mechanism is so weak, our ability to heal is handicapped and the healing process is inefficient or incomplete.

So, because symptoms are the healing activity of the defence mechanism we need something to stimulate the body to act in the way it is already acting i.e. to promote symptoms.

Like Cures Like

This is the basis behind one of the basic laws of homoeopathy.  If a medicine produces symptoms in a healthy person, it will cure those symptoms in a sick person.

Holistic Medicine

Holistic refers to understanding something by examining it as a whole.  Compare this to the conventional view of understanding the whole by examining its parts.

Homoeopathy is holistic because it understands ill-health in terms of the  mental, emotional and physical aspects of a person.

It recognises that these aspects are intimately connected and balance within and between them is vital to the well-being of any individual.

The Concept of Health and Disease

Health is a state of balance within ourselves and within our environment in which we can live our lives, fulfilling our potential.

Disease is an imbalance, which our bodies struggle to address, producing symptoms.

The goal of any homoeopathic treatment is to regain a state of balance in an individual through the use of homoeopathic remedies, and by alterations in nutrition, exercise and lifestyle.

Disease is individual

Because each of us is genetically unique, we each have unique ways of resolving imbalance and will produce correspondingly individual symptoms.

In any named disease e.g. a cold, there will be some symptoms that allow us to identify we have a cold (sore throat, runny nose, headache).

Alongside these there will be peculiar symptoms that only that person has e.g. a feeling like they have a stick in the throat, or a nose that runs only from the left nostril.  It is these individual things that the homoeopath prescribes on.

Homoeopathic treatment is always tailored to you as an individual.

Healing is a process

Once imbalance has reached a point where we can label it as a disease, it is usually at the end stages of a process

This means that healing has to be the reverse of the disease process.

In homoeopathy we carefully watch the process of healing to make sure it is going in the right direction.

Homoeopathy is one of the few medicinal systems which has an accurate 'map' of how healing occurs.

Common Myths:

Homoeopathy is similar to herbalism.  Herbalism is based on a chemical interaction, whereas homoeopathy relies on an energetic one.  For this reason there are no interactions with pharmaceutical drugs and homoeopathy can be used alongside conventional medicine.

Homoeopathy works slowly.  No!  A remedy acts instantaneously.  The time you take to heal depends on how long you have been ill.  If you have been ill for 2 days, homoeopathy will act within hours.  If however you have been ill for 20 years, you cannot expect to be healed in this time.  What you can expect is an increase in your well-being and energy as your healing progresses.

Homoeopathy is no different from placebo.  Whilst some scientific trials can find no difference, this is due to a misunderstanding of homoeopathic principles.  According to the homoeopathic models, we predict precise things to happen after someone has received the correct remedy.  These events do not happen in the event of a placebo.

Homoeopathy only works if you believe in it.  A positive outlook is always beneficial to healing but it is not necessary.  If this were true then homoeopathy would only be a placebo effect.
